SCOTT CHASELING - AN ANTIPODEAN JOURNAL

Exhibition of Glass

I am inverting our understanding of the term "the Antipodes". As this is a British construct and is used to define Australia, I am taking a more literal approach and use the term to bounce it back. As one who comes from Australia, our Antipodes then must be the UK, metaphorically and less geographically.

Now after a year as the Leverhulme Research Fellow and the Senior Research Fellow at The University of Sunderland in the North East of England I have built a new body of work that extends my exploration into the use of narrative paintings that are fused along with blown components. With this new work I still aim to let the paintings be the foundations of the piece, while keeping the forms reduced.

A new direction in my work is the inclusion of casting. The pieces are around 40kg with a curved surface that is acid polished with the three remaining flat surfaces being highly polished. This advancement has allowed for the paintings to 'swim' inside the glass, trapped and held within. The process also gives me the opportunity to embed glass components within the clear mass. These floating objects give a stronger sense of depth and are the moments that we can't hold on to. This is my journal from the Antipodes.
